Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning: It’s Benefits Over Snaking

Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing problems you will face as a homeowner. From slow kitchen sinks to recurring sewer line backups, blockages can disrupt your day and damage your plumbing system if left untreated.

Two of the most common professional solutions are traditional drain snaking and hydro jet drain cleaning. While both methods remove clogs, hydro jetting offers a deeper, longer-lasting clean in many situations. Let’s break down how each method works and why hydro jet drain cleaning is often the better choice.

What is Traditional Drain Snaking?

Drain snaking (also called auguring) uses a long, flexible metal cable with a cutting or corkscrew-style tip. Our Air Assurance plumber feeds the cable into the drain and manually or mechanically rotates it to break apart or hook onto a clog.

What Snaking Does Well

  • Breaks through simple clogs (hair, paper, minor grease buildup)
  • Restores immediate water flow
  • Works well for localized, small blockages

Snaking’s Limitations

A drain snake typically punches a hole through the clog rather than fully clearing the pipe walls. Grease, sludge, soap scum, and debris often remain behind attached to the inside of the pipes, which means the clog can return.

What Is Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning?

Hydro jetting uses highly pressurized water — often up to 4,000 PSI — to completely scrub the inside of your pipes. Instead of just creating a path through the blockage, hydro jetting cleans the entire diameter of the pipe.

Think of it as pressure washing for your plumbing system.

Hydro jetting eliminates grease buildup, soap residue, mineral scale, tree roots (in many cases), and years of accumulated debris.

How an Air Assurance Plumber Performs Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning

Hydro jetting is a precise process that requires professional training and specialized equipment. Here’s what typically happens during the service:

1. Initial Inspection and Diagnosis

Before hydro jetting begins, our plumber will perform a camera sewer inspection. A small waterproof camera is inserted into the drain line to:

  • Identify the exact location of the clog
  • Determine the type of blockage
  • Assess the condition of the pipes
  • Check for cracks, corrosion, or weak joints

This step is critical because hydro jetting uses powerful water pressure. If pipes are severely damaged or fragile, an alternative solution may be recommended.

2. Preparing the Access Point

Next, our plumber locates an appropriate cleanout access point in your plumbing system. This is typically an exterior sewer cleanout, a basement cleanout, or a removable drain access point. The hydro jet hose is inserted into the pipe through this access.

3. Setting Up the Hydro Jetting Equipment

The hydro jet machine includes a high-pressure water tank, a motorized pump, and a flexible hose with a specialized nozzle. Different nozzles are used depending on the job.

  • Forward-facing jets to break apart tough clogs
  • Rear-facing jets to propel the hose and clean pipe walls
  • Specialty nozzles for root intrusion

Our plumber will select the appropriate nozzle based on the inspection findings.

4. Conducting the Hydro Jet Process

As our Air Assurance plumber performs the job, he might not immediately blast full pressure into the pipe at first. Gradually, our plumber will increase the PSI and monitor the debris flow.

The backward-facing jets pull the hose forward while simultaneously scrubbing the pipe walls 360 degrees.

As the high-pressure water moves through the pipe, it breaks apart solid blockages, emulsifies grease, dislodges mineral buildup, and flushes debris downstream toward the municipal sewer connection. Unlike snaking or auguring, which drills through a clog, hydro jetting completely removes buildup along the pipe interior.

5. Final Camera Inspection

After cleaning, our plumber performs another camera inspection to confirm that the clog is fully cleared, make sure the pipe walls are clean, and verify that water is flowing through the pipe properly. This step provides peace of mind and ensures the job was done thoroughly.

Is Hydro Jetting Worth It?

Traditional snaking has its place in plumbing, especially for minor blockages or if a pipe is fragile or deteriorated. In these cases, hydro jetting can cause serious damage to the pipe and require more work. But when it comes to thoroughly cleaning your pipes and preventing future issues, hydro jet drain cleaning offers a more powerful and lasting solution and a smarter long-term investment.

If you suspect buildup or recurring clogs in your home, an Air Assurance professional plumbing inspection can determine whether hydro jetting is the right choice for your system.

Clean pipes don’t just improve drainage — they protect your home from costly water damage and unexpected plumbing emergencies. Contact us at Air Assurance to get your plumbing system inspected and find out if hydro jetting is right for you.
