Hot Water Tanks

The water heater is one of your most used household appliances. Without a quality water treatment system sediment can build up over time in the bottom of your heater which will hamper its performance. Periodically draining the water from your water heater will remove sediment and extend the life of your water heater. It's also important to inspect your water heater burner, a good way of telling is to check the flame under the heater. The flame should appear blue with yellow tips, if it's mostly yellow or if there's a layer of soot and carbon the flue ways might be clogged. Don't try anything at this point, call Air Assurance Plumbing Division and we'll send out a professional to assess the situation.

Once your water heater springs a leak in the housing it's beyond repair and must be replaced. If you have an older water heater it may be cost effective to get it replaced even before it breaks down. Water Heaters made in the last 10-15 years have much higher operating efficiencies than older models and savings in fuel cost can pay for having a new one installed in just a few years. When replacing your water heater or any plumbing fixture consider your long-term savings by buying a high efficiency water heater or even a low water consumptions fixture.

If you're not ready for a new water heater and just want to make your current heater more efficient there are some things you can do:<

  • Start by bundling your water heater in an insulating jacket, especially those that were made before 1992. This will reduce the heat lost through the walls of the tank on your water heater by 25-40%. Jackets work on new water heaters as well as old ones but provide more dramatic energy savings on older models. Make sure that you don't install a jacket on a model where the manufacturer says not to and never cover the thermostat or restrict air inlets.
  • Insulate your hot water pipes to reduce heat loss on the way to your tap and put in heat traps to cut the loss. You should insulate the first 3 feet of cold water pipe that is connected to your water heater as well.
  • You can prolong the life of your water heater by draining and flushing it every six months to remove sediments and to check for rust or corrosion.

What size water heater do you need?

If you often find yourself running out of hot water it may be time to look into getting a water heater with a larger capacity. It's important to get a water heater that will cover your family's needs. You can typically tell the size of water heater that you need by the number of bathrooms in your home though some things can skew these standards such as a family that has small children or a high volume of laundry.

  • 1 bathroom home - minimum 30 to 40 gallons
  • 1 1/2 bath home - minimum 40 to 50 gallons
  • 2 to a 3 1/2 bath home - minimum 50 to 80 gallons
  • 4 bath home - minimum 75 to 120 gallons

Should you choose a Gas Water Heater or an Electric Water Heater?

Natural Gas fuels over half of all water heaters and electricity heats most of the remaining heaters. If natural gas is available a gas water heater would be your most economical choice. Gas is cheaper and faster at heating your tank of water but in some cases gas cannot be used. If it is impossible to run a flue out the roof to carry the water heater's combustion emissions or if gas is not available in your area an electric water heater would be your best choice. Electric water heaters are usually less expensive to install than a gas water heater because they do not require venting but unless electricity is extremely affordable in the region where you live, an electric water heater can be significantly more expensive to run. There are rebates of up to $850 available through Oklahoma Natural Gas to convert from Electric to Gas Water Heating!!
