HVAC Home Comfort Solutions to Be Grateful For

HVAC Home Comfort Solutions to Be Grateful For

In Broken Arrow's climate, your home HVAC system is something to be grateful for. Keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer, it does a lot of work to keep the Oklahoma environment livable. But if you want a bit of extra gratitude for your home comfort solutions this year, consider some of these perks to make a good thing even better:

  • A programmable thermostat. You can save money on your heating and cooling by setting back your thermostat when you're out of the house for a while — but that means having to remember to reset it when you get home, and waiting for the temperature to adjust when you do. A programmable thermostat lets you tell the house to do all that for you, saving you money without you needing to remember a thing.

  • A smart thermostat. Like a programmable thermostat, a smart thermostat can manage your heating and cooling schedule. It may also provide a number of other benefits, such as learning from the adjustments you make and offering you a way to check in or change the schedule from your phone or mobile device.

  • Air purifiers and cleaners. Americans spend a lot of time indoors — away from the natural breezes that continually renew the outdoor air. Indoor air is typically more polluted than outdoor air, but an air cleaner or purifier can address this issue and leave your indoor environment healthier.

  • Whole-house humidifiers or dehumidifiers. Whether it's too dry or too humid, humidity problems can tank your home comfort. In some cases, they can also make your home environment less healthy, contributing to excessive dust production or the growth of bacteria and mold. A humidifier/dehumidifier combination can keep your home humidity balanced.

  • Home zoning system. Not all parts of your home are in use at the same time — so why heat them and cool them as a single unit? A home zoning system lets you direct conditioned air where you need it, when those rooms are occupied.

Air Cleaner or Air Purifier: What Should You Choose?

Air Cleaner or Air Purifier: What Should You Choose?

Homes today are more airtight than ever before, so the air your family breathes can be significantly more polluted than what's outdoors. You might be thinking about having an air cleaner or an air purifier installed, but you're unsure which option is better. To help you decide, here's some helpful information about both of these methods of improving air quality.

Air Cleaners 101

There are two basic types of air cleaners on the market today:

  • Electronic air cleaners that ionize particles to draw them out of the air supply. Ozone is a byproduct of the ionizing process, and it's a known lung irritant that worsens respiratory problems.

  • Mechanical air cleaners use a filter medium to trap undesirable particles and allergens floating in the indoor air supply.

Whole-home mechanical air cleaners are installed on the HVAC ductwork so your home's air supply travels through the filter before it's conditioned and distributed. There are a number of makes and models available that offer different degrees of filtration to get rid of particles like:

  • Ash, soil and dust.

  • Plant pollens.

  • Dust mites.

  • Pet dander.

  • Mold and mildew spores.

  • Tobacco smoke.

Air Purifier Basics

Air purifiers also improve air quality, but they work differently than filtered air cleaners. Instead of capturing particles in a replaceable filter, air purifiers rely on ultraviolet (UV) lamps to eradicate airborne pollutants and contaminants. As with air cleaners, there are whole-home purifiers available that are integrated into the ductwork so all of the return air entering the HVAC system gets zapped and purified before it's heated or cooled and distributed through the supply ducts. The unit's UV germicidal lamps remove odors and kill mold, mildew and biological contaminants like viruses and bacteria.

Do You Need An Air Cleaner or Air Purifier?

Before you decide, have your air quality assessed by a knowledgeable professional to learn whether you need an air cleaner, purifier or a system that combines a filter and UV light. If you need expert advice about whether an air cleaner or air purifier is the best choice for your Broken Arrow home, contact us at Air Assurance. Our goal is to help educate our customers in the Tulsa and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma area about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems). What’s the Difference Between Air Filtration and Air Cleaning?

What’s the Difference Between Air Filtration and Air Cleaning?

The winter is generally too cold to open the windows and fill the house with fresh air. The air inside your home will recirculate through the HVAC system and eventually the indoor air quality will suffer. In order to handle this problem, consider the different benefits air filtration and air cleaning can provide for your home.

Air Filtration

When the house is sealed, the air repeatedly circulates through the HVAC system. Every time that it is heated, a small deposit of dirt is left on the furnace, which can cause the furnace to run less efficiently or become damaged. The holes in standard filters are spacious enough to permit air to flow easily but small enough to catch most particles of dirt.

If allergies are a serious concern, a standard filter don’t help to clean allergens from the air. High-rated MERV filters have tiny holes to trap allergens but the improved air filtration comes with a high price. The increased workload for the furnace will cause a steep increase to your heat bill.

Air Cleaning

Air cleaners can keep your furnace clean without increasing your heating bill. They also remove up to 99 percent of the dust, mold spores, pollen, dander and other particles that make your family sick.

Which One is Right?

If the furnace is your main concern, an air filtration system will take care of it nicely. On the other hand, if you have family with asthma or allergies, a high-rated MERV filter or an air cleaning system would probably be a better choice for you.

Use Houseplants as a Natural Air Cleaner for Your Home

One of the simplest ways to improve air quality inside your home is to use houseplants as natural air cleaner enhancers. They are especially effective when used in conjunction with a good air filter in your HVAC system.

Use Houseplants as a Natural Air Cleaner for Your Home

Plants absorb various gases through their leaves, fueling growth. Plants have also been found capable of removing various volatile organic compounds such as benzene and formaldehyde. Benzene can be found in everyday products such as some plastics, fabrics and in cigarette smoke. Formaldehyde is a common component in cosmetics and detergents.

Plants also help remove carbon monoxide from the air.

Some of the harmful compounds given off by household products have been shown to trigger problems for people who are prone to asthma or have respiratory illnesses.

Plants absorb these gases through the surface of their leaves and roots, and trap them. This helps keep your indoor air cleaner.

Studies have shown that you can use most houseplants as natural air cleaner boosters, but some seem especially more suited to removing certain gases than others. Boston ferns, English Ivy, Japanese royal ferns, aloe vera and peace lilies are just some that have been shown to be particularly effective at removing unwanted compounds from the air.

Five Types Of Air Filters You Need To Know

When deciding what kind of HVAC air filter you want to use, there are a number of factors to consider.  Some are designed to be cleaned more frequently than others while some are more efficient.  Here are five of the most common types of air filters for use in the Tulsa and Broken Arrow region.Disposable FiltersThese are the most common air filters that are used because of their economical pricing and ease of use.  They should be replaced every six to eight weeks for maximum efficiency.  They are not designed to be washed.  This will only create holes which will make them less efficient.  As for efficiency, these are what is described as "boulder catchers".  They can only filter the extremely large particles flowing throughout your system, for instance, many can't stop salt when sprinkled on top of them.Permanent FiltersThese come in various sizes to fit your needs and do not need to be replaced.  They are easily removable to allow the user to clean them.  It is recommended that you clean them every 30 to 60 days to keep them operating at full power.  These are normally the most restrictive type air filters due to the long lasting fiber the filter is made out of.  This can put a major strain on airflow, causing increased dust, reduced comfort, and potential harm to the system.Hammock FiltersThese come in a  20-foot roll, allowing you to cut the filter to the appropriate size for a your hammock frame.  Once cut, you simply place them in the frame and trim any excess.  They should be disposed and replaced every 60 days. This is similair to the disposable in efficiency.  Most homeowners are bothered by the time it takes to maintain these.Electrostatic Air CleanerThese use electrostatic attraction to trap charged particles in the air and are very efficient at arresting dust, pollen, bacteria and other airborne pollutants.  They are permanent and can be easily washed every month.  Again, these type of filters are extremely restrictive to air flow.Large Pleated Media FiltersThis type of filter is popular because of the low maintenance required to keep them lasting for at least five years.  They tend to have very high efficiency levels and use a media cartridge that has to be replaced only every six months.  There are several different "levels" of pleated media.  You don't have to get the most expensive!  Usually those are very restrictive as well.If you are wondering what type of filtration system is best for your and your family, just ask your technician.  And by the way, Air Assurance has designed their own filters.  They're called Clean-Climate and we've tested them to make sure you get the optimum value of low resistance, high efficiency cleaning, as well as economic pricing.Air Assurance has been serving Oklahoma residents for more than 30 years. Comparing Electronic Air Cleaners

Indoor air quality can be affected by a number of factors such as airborne particles, chemical vapors and unwanted odors.  And every family has different air quality needs depending on allergies, asthma or other sensitivities.  Electronic air cleaners can address most of the problems you may be faced with, but different models offer different features.  It is important to know what features an air cleaner has before you make a purchase to ensure that it meets your specific needs.Electronic air cleaners offer a number of different features, including:

  • Specific contaminant targets - Not all air cleaners address the same type of indoor air pollutants. Some only target certain contaminants while others tackle multiple issues. Dirt, dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, chemicals, bacteria and viruses are all removed in different ways. Find out which of these is addressed by your air cleaner.

  • Efficiency - Energy efficiency is a factor to consider, but air cleaner efficiency typically refers to the percentage of contaminants that can be removed from the air. Higher percentages indicate higher efficiency.

  • Range - Portable electronic air cleaners only cover a small area, usually limited to one room in your home. Whole-house air cleaners work with your existing heating and cooling equipment to provide clean air in every room of the house.

  • Ozone - Some air cleaners produce ozone, a known lung irritant, as a byproduct. If this is a concern for you, make sure that you purchase equipment that does not produce ozone.

Bringing fresh air into your home is one way to improve indoor air quality, but this is not always possible when your air conditioning is running for most of the hot Tampa Bay summer.  Installing an air cleaner is an excellent alternative that will keep your indoor air clean and fresh all year long.Narrowing your choices can be a daunting task, especially if you're not sure what you need.  The professionals at ABS Air Conditioning will work with you to determine your air-cleaning needs and identify systems that will work best in your home.  Call us today to learn more about what electronic air cleaners can do for you.Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).  For more information, click here.Air Assurance services Tulsa, Broken Arrow and the surrounding areas. How To Improve Your Home's Indoor Air Quality

Low indoor air quality can lead to a host of health problems, and is cited again and again as one of the top preventable threats to your good health. Indoor air contaminants include dust, mold and fungi, bacteria, viruses and even carbon monoxide, posing health risks that include everything from allergies and asthma to chronic respiratory problems. Undetected buildups of carbon monoxide can even be fatal. Making an effort to maintain good indoor air quality is essential to your health and the health of your family. One of the easiest and least expensive things you can do to improve your indoor air quality is to purchase a whole home air cleaner for your comfort system. This literally removes the contaminants out of your air and, when properly used, can greatly reduce the presence of microorganisms, contaminants, smoke, dust and other unhealthy particles.  Of course, sealing the duct system to ensure no other contaminants navigate into the system on a regular basis is also necessary for the ultimate in clean air.Carbon monoxide, the "silent killer," is extremely dangerous. With increasing awareness of the dangers it poses, carbon monoxide detectors are now seen as essential to home safety as smoke detectors. Mount your carbon monoxide detector in a high place, away from heat-generating appliances like furnaces and ovens, and away from humid areas like your bathroom or laundry room to ensure you get accurate readings. If you have an HVAC system, you should get it inspected, cleaned and serviced regularly to ensure it's circulating clean air and not blowing contaminants and particles into the rooms of your home. In some cases, poor HVAC system design or installation can lead to problems with indoor air quality, in which case a major redesign may be necessary to correct the issue and prevent major health problems. You should have your indoor air quality tested regularly by a qualified professional, who can also suggest causes for air contamination and offer solutions tailored to your specific situation. If you need to service, repair or redesign your HVAC system, be sure to find a local contractor with a good reputation for quality service and workmanship so you find a permanent solution to the problem. Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).  For more information, click here to download our free Home Comfort Resource guide.
